Double Dilemma

I would love to hear from all of you parents of two or more kids out there: are double strollers worth it? I just assumed we'd get a double stroller with our second baby on the way, and as I was about to buy one, Jay asked me if we really need one. (Can you tell which of us is practical and the other is a spendthrift?) I have to admit, he did have a point. I imagine myself taking the kiddos on walks, to the park, and around the mall in a beautiful double stroller. But there is also the possibility that we'll buy it and it will gather dust in the garage.

So, those of you with more experience: Should we get a double stroller? If so, which one?
If I had an extra $600 lying around, my dream stroller is this one:
But, since I can't justify paying that much for a stroller, and I can't find it on sale anywhere, I would have to go with a backup. A very similar stroller, the EasyWalker Duo, can be found on sale if you're not choosy about color. I think I like the side-by-sides much better than the tandem ones, since those seem to feel like driving a long bus. The Duo is nice because it is narrower than many side-by-sides, and more substantial than some of the lightweight umbrella strollers.
I've also thought about a sit-and-stand, like the Joovy below. I think Hayden would enjoy the freedom, though it doesn't seem as practical for walks/jogging.

But, what do I know?! I'd love some advice.
***Update: You can win my favorite stroller here: http://simple-reviews.blogspot.com/2009/03/bumbleride-indie-twin-stroller-giveaway.html. Wish me luck!

we just have a regular stroller, the one that came with the carseat, and we just stack the kids in a line like cookies in a package! hehe. good luck, i dont know anything about strollers, just how to open them and push them!

my sister has the sit-and-stand, which she likes, but i don't think it would work for jogging. we're still a single-child family so i've not yet thought about this issue ... but i'm very excited for you.

I don't know alot about the current double strollers out there, but our double stroller was worth the money we spent. We used it all the time and that was before we had the twins!

I had a double jogging stroller when I just had Olivia and Izzy and I loved it. I was out walking/jogging every day then and definitely got my money's worth. The only thing was that I didn't have a swivel front wheel and I really wish I had bought one that swiveled. We also had a regular double stroller(long one) that you could fit a carseat in, and I used that whenever we took trips to the zoo or the fair because it had a lot more storage space and you could move the sun canopies to actually cover where the sun went. I just sold both strollers and bought a joovy sit and stand because that way the girls can take turns sitting and standing, or squish both their butt cheeks on that little bench, but it also can hold the carseat which I still love using until they are about 6 months old. Anyways, hope this helps.

For baby number three I finally got the best stroller I ever had, it was my fifth stroller I think. The Phil and Ted's. http://www.pishposhbaby.com/brands-phil-teds.html?gclid=CIilwuqzrJkCFRo-awodRD0UKA I love this stroller because it has the convenience of a double stroller that is rugged but not huge. I have put a lot of miles on it. I also have the Joovy and it is a good stroller for strolling but not for serious walking and it is difficult to maneuver as the kids get heavier. I hope this helps, and yes, it is definitely worth the money to get a good stroller.

My two kids are 18 months apart so a double stroller was a must at first. I bought a graco quattro tour and it was great at first because it was cheap ( for double strollers) and my daughter slept on her tummy. But now that she is 10 months she wont sit in it because she wants to be up front. I love the side by sides! The phil and ted is the one I am about to buy off craigslist for 150. I would try to find that one used because it is the best. Oh, and a swivel wheel is a must if you want to use it for both malls and jogging. It fits through doors and works for jogging too. That duo looks awsome also. Khalil is to adventurous for a sit-n-stand. I would be running after him just as much as if I didn't have a stroller so it seemed like a wast for me. between my two and my older sisters 5.5 I know a lot about strollers!! Hope this helps.

I'm not a jogger, so I don't know about that. But, after #3 came along we got a side by side umbrella type (it's a Jeep brand actually) and we NEVER use it. They're just so wide and big. I'm wishing we had the sit and stand because it's narrow and like you said, there's more freedom. Currently we just use the regular stroller with the carseat, then sometimes #1 and #2 stand on the front holding on or sit on the cupholders. We've just gotten used to them walking with us and not being strapped in. Good luck!

I have a double chariot and I love it. It doubles as a bike trailer which I love, stroller, jogger. But it is also in the $600 price range but is worth every penny. My kids are 16 months apart and I needed it. It poured the other day while I was out and both girls were dry!

Okay now that I have baby #4 and he is only 17 months younger than Claire, I am wanting a double stroller. I had an old one (bought second-hand) that was like pushing a Cadillac and I used it like three times, so when we moved I sent it to DI. I found that I didn't go on very many walks when I worked full-time. You are still working full-time, right? Now that I am home all the time, I think I will use one.
Right now, I just use our stroller that came with the car seat and sit both Cate and Claire in the stroller together and then I have Marcus in a sling. (Yeah, my walks are a work.out.)
When I was working all the time, I used the stroller when we went places, so it would be awkward to have a big jogger/double stroller. I haven't really wanted one until now. Katie and Aaron have a umbrella double stroller that they love.
Honestly, I would wait and see if you find yourself really wanting one after the baby is born. If I have the timing right, the baby will be too small to really sit in the double stroller for a few months, and then it will be winter so you might not use the stroller too much anyway. You might not use it until next summer. Just a thought.
I went on a lot of walks with Cate in the stroller and Claire in a Baby Bjorn. If you really think you want one - check Costco. I just saw one there last week that was only $130 and my friend said it was the one she wanted, but it cost $350 at the time. Good luck!

I have the sit and stand. I like it because it is smaller than the regular double stroller.
I think every stroller has good things and bad things. You have to decide what you really want to use it for. For me a double stroller was a must. My Hayden doesn't stay by me. He must be stapped in.

I'm so glad I decided to check your blog today! It sounds like you're doing well and that your pregnancy is going well.
Your guess is as good as mine as far as the strollers go. To me, a double stroller would be worth it, but I know how dumb it would be if you ended up spending a ton on it and then not use it.
Anyhow, good luck. So happy to know how you're doing!
Take care~

When my baby #2 came along, we decided that the double stroller was a must. We have a side-by-side and really like it. My mother-in-law had a tandem one and it was HUGE and very hard to push.
Good luck!

Hi guys,

So, we are also pondering this issue, but I would agree with your friend who says to wait until the baby comes and see if you want one after all. I think you will need to see what Hayden is doing at that point, and what his needs are to determine what will work best for your family.

Clara has increased her desire to ride since she wants to participate with Montgomery, so we are thinking of the "sit-n-stand deluxe" for our family. It has the attachment for the baby carrier. Also, it has two full seats like a tandem stroller, but the back seat can be removed to turn the stroller into a sit-n-stand stroller. It seems like a pretty flexible option that can change according to our needs, and is pretty affordable.

Phil and Teds seem like cool strollers, but weren't they recalled recently? Something about the kids falling out of the bottom seat. That is a MAJOR drawback to me, not to mention the PRICE!

Good luck

Hey! Didn't know you guys had a blog! Definitely recommend getting a double stroller if you want to have any sort of sanity when you go out! :) I still use it with Carson and Sydni, but it was really handy with the boys... I am sure I would have lost one of them if it weren't for being able to buckle them into the stroller!! Good luck deciding on which one!

I have to comment again now that I have my Phil and Ted side by side.WOW!!! I love this stroller!! It is worth paying the bucks for!!! I can't say enough good things about it. I easily, not just barley, fits through all doorways. It even fits through doorways turning a sharp corner. It is easier then my single graco to push, lays completely flat for the kids, and folds up great, best stroller in the world!!!!! I have used 4 different double strollers never really used them because they were to difficult. But wow I love this one.

This site has a bunch of double strollers for pretty decent prices. Shipping is free when you spend $100 or more, so that's a plus. http://www.albeebaby.com/view-all-double-strollers.html
